Geography, History, and Ethnography This article is divided into the following sections: The total number of Baluch in Baluchistan in Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan , the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, and elsewhere in Asia and Africa is variously estimated at between three and five million. Their history up to the time when they were drawn into Western colonial history in the 19th century is poorly known. A copious literature has been produced on them since then, especially in English, but also in Persian and several other European and regional languages. Baluchistan is generally understood by the Baluch and their neighbors to comprise an area of over half a million square kilometers in the southeastern part of the Iranian plateau, south of the central deserts and the Helmand river, and in the arid coastal lowlands between the Iranian plateau and the Gulf of Oman. Its boundaries are vague and not consistent with modern provincial boundaries. It appears to have been divided throughout history between Iranian highland and Indian lowland spheres of influence, and since it has been formally divided among Afghanistan, Iran, and India later Pakistan.

Netnography is an adaptation of ethnography, which is a very old, traditional technique in anthropology which is based on participant observation. It literally means “writing about cultures”– the study of culture that’s written up. And a netnography is an adaptation of ethnography for the online world–for the contingencies of online communities and online cultures.

The nearly all-white, bikini and lingerie clad sorority sisters portrayed pranced happily throughout the over-5 minute long video, never opening a book, attending a class, or even appearing to be affiliated with a learning environment. As a college instructor, the mother of a young girl, and self-proclaimed feminist, I mentally ripped the video apart when I saw it.

I also conceded that the video was probably racially insensitive, but my biggest concern with the video and the women portrayed lay in another vein: It went something like this: Watch the video, and tell me how many ways Class is displayed. I pick up on the class things more than race.

More recently, theorists of play Brian Sutton-Smith and Mary Flanagan have questioned this assertion, pointing to cultural formation and subversion as products of play. Positivist thinkers and game design practitioners like Jesse Schell have identified the production of subjectivation, via a heightened sense of self-esteem as a result of the achievement of goals within games.

Using a philosophical framework of transcendental empiricism that aims to identify the conditions of creative production, we use concepts from Gilles Deleuze and Gilbert Simondon and the play theorists mentioned above to examine the nature and history of the concept of production in play and propose several additional ways in which play may be considered productive.

These are the production of percepts and affects; the production of transductive individuations; the production of social individuals and identity; the production of anxiety; the production of culture; the production of subversion; the production of global corporate profit and the production of memory. We arrive at these assertions by discussing three key topics:

Cancel 0 Are you guys on Tinder? I was pretty oblivious to this phenomenon for a while until I noticed a bunch of my dude friends fiddling around with it. It shows you all the men or women or both in your area, and you can check out their pictures before liking them by pressing the green heart or swiping right or giving them a pass by pressing the red X or swiping left.

I asked some of my guys why they used it. A couple of them have been on Tinder dates, or at least gotten Tinder-laid. And the idea of Tinder made me pretty uncomfortable, to be honest. Then I thought, A-ha!

The name of several distinguished persons mentioned in the Old Testament Kings, Par. His mother was Maacha, daughter of Tholmai, King of Gessur. The sacred writer who sketches for us the career of Absalom 2 Samuel 13 – 18 lays stress upon the faultless beauty of the youth’s appearance, and mentions in particular the luxurious wealth of his hair, which, when shorn, weighed over ten ounces. The significance of this latter note becomes apparent when we remember the important part which the culture of the hair played in the devotions of the Eastern people note even at this day the ceremonial prayers of the Dervishes.

Sounds familiar: People on online dating sites are experiencing frustration because it does seem that the internet in many ways is just the same old bar scene.

What factors do people account for when they swipe right on an online dating app? Would you be so confident in expressing your interest in person? Online dating helps her meet people more efficiently because the apps will match her to people of similar personalities and interests. If they hit it off then great, but if not, then online rejection is a softer blow.

To continue my research further, I focused specifically on Muslim online dating. What factors led my friend to online dating as practicing Muslim youths? This ethnography focuses on online dating, and how it relates specifically to the Muslim demographic. This includes studying the diversity of Muslims and Muslim dating applications, and how they differ in what they have to offer. Online dating is not a new phenomenon, and it has been studied before by several scholars that focus on a variety of ethnographies.

This specific ethnography on online dating focused on how and why college students use the smartphone dating app. However, there is little that ethnographers and scholars have to offer about the Muslim demographics relationship to online dating. I draw on my theory that the increase in online dating amongst Muslims is a result of the shift in culture between digital natives and digital immigrants. This shift in digital culture along with the perception of Islamic culture has also attributed to this increase in Muslim online dating.

People on online dating sites are experiencing frustration because it does seem that the internet in many ways is just the same old bar scene. This is one of the findings of research by anthropologist Susan E. She is conducting an ethnographic study of online dating among women age thirty and above. She says the women on the one hand gained a sense of empowerment from their online dating experiences. But they still wanted the man to make the first move and expected him pick up the tab: But, at the same time, they are experiencing frustration because it does seem that the internet in many ways is just the same old bar scene.

Complaints include a preponderance of men who are looking for much younger women, as well as men who misrepresent their looks, interests or marital status, or who show little interest in moving the relationship offline, she said.

Anthropology has gone high tech. That includes ethnography, the study of cultures. Though ethnographers have historically observed their subjects in person, the fact that we now live so much of our lives online means these scientists also have a growing interest in the virtual human experience. We sat down with the team members — students Liza Kurtz, Melissa Beresford and Monet Niesluchowski; postdoctoral scholar Sarah Trainer; and Professors Amber Wutich and Alexandra Brewis Slade — to discuss the unique implications and requirements for this type of study, and how the relatively unexplored digital space is ripe with potential for insights into humankind.

Online ethnography studies usually last over a set period of days (three to 10) but can be extended to last several weeks or months. Each participant typically spends a total of two to three hours per week providing detailed answers.

Chasing women through QQ is a reciprocal exchange process during which the resources to be exchanged in the interaction are not negotiated. Rather, the men provide resources to the women, hoping for rewards in return that are not guaranteed. This characteristic of the exchange makes men who chase women through QQ very strategic in their action. They try to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs by adopting myriad strategies, such as constructing an attractive online identity by strategic self-presentation.

The role of emotions in the exchange process is also examined. Men learn the emotional norms through the online forum, but sometimes it is difficult for them to control their emotions; some men fall in love when they are not supposed to. As it happens, they have failed to calculate the costs and rewards rationally in that they may provide too many resources to the women without getting enough rewards in return. This book provides original insights into the thought processes, motivations, desires, anxieties and risks of Hong Kong men seeking short-term sexual relations with women on the mainland.

These insights are highly relevant to our understanding of the quickly evolving use of social media, a phenomenon of worldwide importance and deep implications. This book presents a timely study of the use of social media in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It uses social exchange theory, and the sociology of emotions, to study selected sites in the QQ online forum to explain the strategies pursued by men in Hong Kong to establish short-term sexual relations with women in Mainland China, especially in the neighboring city of Shenzhen.

It focuses on the distinction between negotiated and reciprocal social exchange from a social exchange theory perspective, and, to a lesser extent, combines these concepts with insights from the sociology of emotions, to better explain the data.
